From the Lehman Bros. bankruptcy to unprecedented banking bailouts to AIG's shocking collapse to Madoff's epic Ponzi scheme, we have witnessed an implosion of our financial system. Following the overhaul of our accounting profession early this decade, one would presume that the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and subsequent rulings at the federal, state and local levels, would sound alarm bells when significant business risks and internal fraud problems emerge.

In this colossal meltdown, where were the auditors, regulators and SEC? As we question, how did they let it happen, we will discuss the impact on the accountant's future responsibilities and how to prevent it from happening again.

This course will provide an overview of

  • The timeline of key financial events and government decisions
  • Understanding the ramifications of systemic business risk
  • The role of credit default swaps, toxic assets and off-balance sheet accounts
  • The growing concern over clients and their ability to do business

We will be examining the rise and fall of actual companies that made headlines and history including an in-depth look at how Bernie Madoff operated his vast Ponzi scheme.

A general discussion will follow to evaluate this common thread of poor judgment, conflict of interest and complete lack of honesty to determine if it was fraud, greed or stupidity.

A video will be featured of actual behind-the-scenes government decision-making. This course will be constantly updated as new information is revealed in the investigations. Recommended 8 CPE hours.
